Limits

The Măcin Mountains National Park (MMNP) has a surface of 11,151.82 hectares, and is divided into two zones: Pricopan Heights and Măcin Mountains. The limits of the MMNP are published in Government Decision no. 230/2003 amended by Government Decision 1529 of November 1, 2007. They are marked by a red square framed in a white border.

Pricopan Heights:

Northern limit: It begins in the NW of the origin of the Vasilica Mică Valley (forester mark 324 UP II Greci OS Măcin), under Cheia Peak (259.7 m), afterwards it continues on the limit of the forestry fund – forester marks 379, 378 UP I Luncaviţa – until the first left confluence (forestry mark 376 UP II Luncaviţa). From here it goes eastwards on the slope change line, traversing the origins of the Vasilica Mare Valley – forestry mark 374 UP I Luncaviţa, Sulucelului – forestry mark 366 UP I Luncaviţa, continuing on the limit of the forestry fund, the forestry marks 364, 362, 360, 358 UP I Luncaviţa – Moş Andrei Valley (or Moş Dinu) – the forestry mark 316 UP I Luncaviţa, until the saddle between the Pricopan Hill and the Îmbulzita Hill – the forestry marks 317 and 312 UP I Luncaviţa OS Măcin.

Eastern limit: from the saddle between the Pricpan Hill and the Îmbulzita Hill (forestry marks 317 and 312 UP I Luncaviţa), the limit does southwards to the base of the eastern slope of the Pricopan Heights following the limit of the forestry fund – through the forestry marks 314, 313, 303, 302, 301, 293, 292, 279, 278, 277, 275, 276, 280, 290, 287, 286, 281 UP II Greci OS Măcin – until North of Greci to the northern limit of the crop fields – the forestry mark 283 UP II Greci OS Măcin.

Southern Limit: It goes around the base – the forestry mark 283 UP II Greci OS Măcin, the last peak (120 m altitude), of the southern extreme point of the Pricopan Heights, north of Greci.

Western limit: it begins North of Greci – the forestry mark 283 UP II Greci OS Măcin – following a general SSE -NNW direction, around the base of the Western slope, on the border between the forestry fund which is included in the natural park and its neighboring area (the crop fields or pastures of the Greci commune), it goes around Greci Hill (Sulucu) (167.0 m) – through the forestry marks 282, 284, 288, 289, 291, 294, 295, 296, 297, 298, 299, 305, 306, 307, 308 UP II Greci – until East of the buildings of the Tobacco Administration. It goes up eastwards until the first peak (189.6 m – the forestry mark 309 UP II Greci) and continues until meeting the coast way which follows the slopes on the Western frame of Pricopan Heights, following the 200 m level curve southwards, going up towards the peak (226.0 m), afterwards going down to the SW until the base of the slope, following the SSE-NNW general direction, traversing a series of valleys on the 100 m level curve until the forestry mark 333 UP II Greci, then continuing on the limit of the forestry fund – the forestry marks 329, 328, 327, 326, 323, 322 UP II Greci – until the NW of the origin of the Vasilica Mică Valley – the forestry mark 324 UP II Greci – where it meets the northern limit.

The Măcin Mountains

Northern limit: it begins at the exit of the Jijila Valley [XIV – 1.49] from the forest (the saddle between the Pricopan Hill and the Îmbulzita Hill – the 206 UP I Luncaviţa OS Măcin forestry mark), on the limit of the forestry fund, going around the origins of Alexe’s Valley (forestry marks 283, 281, 282, 280, 278 UP I Luncaviţa, OS Măcin) and traversing the valleys: Chiţu’s Valley (forestry mark 276 UP I Luncaviţa, OS Măcin), Trocu Valley (forestry marks 274, 272, 271 UP I Luncaviţa, OS Măcin), Trofin’s Valley (forestry marks 264, 265, 266, 245, 246, 243, 242, 228, 226 UP I Luncaviţa, OS Măcin) and Osman Valley (forestry marks 224, 225 UP I Luncaviţa, OS Măcin). From Osman Valley it goes up towards the NE of Osman Valley (forestry marks 347, 345, 343, 340, 214 UP I Luncaviţa OS Măcin), afterwards going down in the SE general direction until terminal 195 UP I Luncaviţa, OS Măcin, traversing some small valley (forestry marks 215, 212, 213, 206, 205, 203, 201, 196 UP I Luncaviţa, OS Măcin). From here it follows upstream the Gairu Mitrofan Valley (Dry Valley) (the forestry marks 115, 117, 119, 391, 390 UP I Luncaviţa OS Măcin until the second confluence on the right – the forestry mark 125 UP I, OS Măcin), until the second confluence on the right (forestry mark 125 UP I, OS Măcin) with an affluent which it follows close to its origin, (Wild Strawberries Valley, with the terminals 127, 124 UP I Luncaviţa OS Măcin), it traverses the height at the origin of the Curăturii Valley [XV – 1.3.1] (the forestry marking 127 UP IV Mitrofan Valley, OS Cerna).

Eastern limit: from the origin of Curăturii Valley [XV-1.3.1.] (forestry mark 127 UP IV, OS Cerna) the limit continues on the valley (forestry marks 130, 126, 132, 124, 135, 120, 136, UP IV Mitrofan Valley OS Cerna) until the confluence of Taiţa Valley [XV-1.3], (forestry mark 119 UP IV, Mitrofan Valley OS Cerna) which it follows (forestry marks 168, 169, 172, 173, 176 UP IV Mitrofan Valley OS Cerna) until the confluence with the Gypsy Woman’s (Ţigăncii) Valley (Mitrofan Valley – forestry mark 117 UP IV Mitrofan Valley OS Cerna), it traverses it, goes to the right of the Taiţa and follows the limit of the forestry fund making an entrance to the North-West on the Mitrofan Valley until confluence with Sărături Valley (forestry mark 2 UP IV Mitrofan Valley OS Cerna), where it returns towards the SE traversing: Sofronie’s Heights (forestry marks 1 and 180 UP IV Mitrofan Valley and the forestry mark 120 UP III Ţiganca OS Cerna), Meterezu Mic Valley (the forestry marks 119, 115, 114, 113, 110 UP III Ţiganca OS Cerna), Meterezu Mare Valley (forestry marks 105 107, 103, 100, 99, 98, UP III Ţiganca OS Cerna), Mills (Morilor) Valley (forestry marks 75, 74, 73, UP III Ţiganca OS Cerna). From here it follows the limit of the forestry fund going around Nifon village by North-West (forestry marks 72, 70, 66, 62 UP III Ţiganca OS Cerna), traversing Porcăreţii Valley (Bâlca Valley – forestry marks 59, 58, 57, 53, 54 UP III Ţiganca OS Cerna) and Wine (Vinului) Valley (forestry marks 55, 27, 28, 29, 30, 23, 22, 18, 14 UP III Ţiganca OS Cerna). Ilia Valley (forestry marks 15, 10, 3, 8, 5, 4, 1 UP III Ţiganca OS Cerna). Then the limit follows the border between the forestry fund and its neighboring areas, represented by the crop fields or pastures of Hamcearca and Balabancea (forestry marks 152 bis, 152, 150, 149, 148, 137, 136, 135, 134, 132, 133, 122, 121, 120, 107, 106, 76, 67, 56, 53 UP II OS Cerna), then it makes an entrance to the West traversing the Ulucilor Valley (forestry mark 137 UP II OS Cerna) and then it comes back to the West until the southern extremity of Crapcea Hill (forestry mark 55 UP II OS Cerna).

Southern limit: it follows the ridge of Crapcea Hill (forestry marks 104, 105, 108, 109, 111, 112, 115 UP II, OS Cerna), until its Western extremity (forestry mark 116 UP II, OS Cerna) and orients itself to the North-West on the ridge and the border of the forestry fund (forestry marks 117, 99, 100, 101, 102 UP II OS Cerna) until Martina Valley (Ash tree Valley – forestry mark 96 UP II, OS Cerna). It goes around the base of the Dealu Mare (Great Hill) Heights (forestry marks 95, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 80, 79, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 52, 53, 54, 57, 59, 60, 47, 48 UP II, OS Cerna), then it traverses the Gypsy Woman’s Footpath (Poteca Ţigăncii) Valley (forestry marks 38, 37, 34 UP II OS Cerna), Deep Road (Drumu Adânc) Valley (forestry marks 24, 17, 18, 20, 21 UP II, OS Cerna), Bratu’s Hut (Bordeiu lui Bratu) Valley (forestry marks 15, 6, 7, 1 UP II, OS Cerna) and it goes around the southern border of the Şaua Mare (Great Saddle) Heights border (forestry marks 212, 213, 214, 215, 216, 217, 218, 219, 220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225, 226, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, UP II OS Cerna) with the Arheuziu Peak (313.3 m)

Western limit: From the base of the Great Saddle (Şaua Mare) Heights the Northern limit continues northwards until the border between the forestry fund (forestry marks 193, 194, 195, 197, 198, 199, 201, 204, 205, 210, 234, 237, 238, 240, 249, 252, 253, 254, 255, 256 UP II Greci, OS Măcin), and its neighboring areas (crop fields and pastures), then it makes a great entrance into the Poplars Valley, traversing the Children (Copiilor) Valley (forestry mark 243 UP II Greci OS Măcin), Dobra’s Valley (forestry mark 236 UP II Greci OS Măcin), Three Poplars Valley (forestry mark 157 UP II Greci, OS Măcin), Deep (Adâncă) Valley (forestry mark 150 UP II Greci OS Măcin), Radului Valley (forestry mark 108 UP II Greci, OS Măcin) Jug’s Valley (Dediu’s Valley – forestry mark 83 UP II Greci, OS Măcin) and Otului Valley (forestry mark 76 UP II Greci, OS Măcin). Next the limit maintains the South – North general direction, following the border of the forestry fund (forestry marks 57, 79, 80, 81, 60, 61, 271, 270, 269, 267, 266, 255, 38, 37 UP II Greci, OS Măcin) and traverses the valleys: Ditcova, Caraba (forestry mark 269 UP II Greci, OS Măcin), whereupon it goes up on the Ţuţuiatu Hill Heights (Ghinaltu Peaks – 442.5 m), then it goes around the Morsu Valley under Greci Peak (East of Ţuţuiatu Peak – 467 m), becoming an affluence of the Recea (Cold) Valley close to the inferior limit of the forestry fund (forestry marks 30, 32, 140, 123, 35, 34, 33, 24, 18, 14, 13, 12, 11, 9, 5, 6, 2, 7, 1, 3, UP II Greci and the forestry marks 303, 308, 310, 311, 312 UP I Luncaviţa OS Măcin) until Îmbulzita Hill; next it traverses the saddle between Pricopan Heights and Îmbulzita Hill (forestry marks 309, 307 UP I Luncaviţa OS Măcin) and it continues until Jijila Creek (forestry mark 206 UP I Luncaviţa OS Măcin) where it meets the Northern limit.
